Schorer’ international prevention programme is based on the following principles:
- The prevention of, screening for and treatment of HIV and STI cannot be considered independently of each other.
- Planned prevention leads to an efficient, effective and sustainable approach.
- Prevention programmes are to be developed in collaboration with the target groups and based on knowledge about the target group that has been gathered by means of a community-based needs assessment.
- Effective prevention demands an integrated approach. Along with prevention, attention must be given to building up capacity within the organisation, making mainstream healthcare and well-being institutions more accessible, improving social and political attitudes towards sexual minorities and empowering the target groups themselves.
