Best possible health and well-being voor gays and bisexuals mission and vision

MissionIt is Schorer’s mission to work on securing the best possible health and well-being for gay and bisexual men, women and transgenders.

Schorer endeavours to provide gay and bisexual men, women and transgenders everywhere in the country with access to the information, knowledge and facilities they need to achieve their optimal health and well-being. In that connection, Schorer takes into account that younger homosexual men and women are less apt to refer to themselves as being (primarily) gay; their homosexuality is not as important to them in terms of shaping their personal identity. For Schorer, it is the behaviour of the target group – rather than its inclination – that counts most when developing the form and content of projects aimed at promoting health and/or well-being.

VisionSchorer’s vision stems from the fact that homosexuality is not always accepted. In terms of both psycho-social and physical health, gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders are often at a disadvantage compared to heterosexual men and women. In particular, the problem of HIV and STI in the Netherlands is far more apt to affect gay men than it does straight men and women. Internationally, too, men who have sex with men (MSM) are recognised as being a vulnerable group in terms of HIV and AIDS.

Nonetheless, homosexual men and women, bisexuals and transgenders have the same right to receive the same level of health and quality of life as heterosexual men and women. On the basis of its vision, Schorer will work to make sure its target group will benefit fully from that right to health. And Schorer will (help) generate relevant research and up-to-date information, develop whatever activities are necessary and influence the political and social agendas. To bring this about, Schorer has the ambition to enter into any discussion about the social issues relevant to its target group in an open, creative and flexible manner.
