Visit the official Gay and Lesbian HOMOMONUMENTThe Homomonument commemorates all homosexual men and women who have been – or are still being – persecuted and even murdered by government regimes that fail to recognise their very right to be. The monument honours the brave gay men and women who struggled for the freedom and human rights of people with a different sexual orientation than was and is considered normal.
The Homomonument, at the Westermarkt in the historic heart of Amsterdam, was officially unveiled on Saturday, 5 September 1987. The monument calls for vigilance.
The monument is also a place where individuals come to commemorate and celebrate. Gay men and women from around the globe are drawn to the monument to lay flowers, take photographs and embrace one another.
